Training your brain to get Happy
We read all the time about the importance of thinking positively and the law of attraction. As a Hypnotherapist specializing in Anxiety, Depression and Self Esteem, I’ve spent a lot of time researching both and I have extensively studied the relationship between the function of the brain itself and how it correlates with how we feel. Through my research I have made some amazing discoveries which I would like to present in layman’s terms for you here.
Before you read on though, try this: After reading this sentence, close your eyes and imagine a blue sky. Easy, right? Now, close your eyes and imagine the math problem 2+2=4 Now, close your eyes and imagine a yellow triangle. Again, not hard to do at all.
That’s how in control of your thoughts you really are. Why am I pointing this out? Because you feel what you think and controlling your thinking and allowing only positive thoughts to cross your mind is the most effective way to avoid anxiety and depression. This isn’t theory, it’s actually backed by neuro-science!
You see, your brain reacts to every thought you think. Positive thinking quiets your Amygdala (the fear center of your brain) and stimulates your brain to produce serotonin (the happy chemical) the more serotonin you produce, the higher functioning your brain activity. You problem solve better, you learn new ideas easier and your brain tells your body to feel better as well.
On the other hand, the effects of negative thinking impair your brain function. Negative thinking slows down brain coordination, making it difficult to process thoughts and find solutions. Negative thoughts activate your Amygdala, causing the physical sensation of anxiety and which slow the brain’s ability to process new information thus limiting your creative problem solving skills. Additionally, an activated Amygdala impacts your left temporal lobe, which affects mood, memory, and impulse control.
So thinking positive thoughts not only make you feel happier overall but also makes you smarter!
Now you may be wondering, what does Clinical Hypnotherapy have to do with thinking positively? Can’t someone just make those changes themselves? Why would they need a Hypnotherapist? Yes, changing the way you think can be done without the aid of a Clinical Hypnotherapist. But if your brain has been wired to operate a certain way for a really long time those changes can be extremely difficult. While there’s so much more to it, in a nutshell, Hypnosis relaxes your mind to such a great extent that your Amygdala all but shuts down leaving your brain at its best, ready to fire up new neurons about being positive and happy; and the quicker your brain retrains, the faster you get happy.
A skilled Clinical Hypnotherapist who understands neuro-science will tell your brain stories and have you imagine all sorts of things, all designed to stimulate the happy part of your brain and quiet the anxious part of your brain.
