HOW TO CHOOSE A HYPNOTHERAPIST
These days an increasing number people believe that drug free therapies, such as Hypnotherapy, are more in keeping with their lifestyle and aspirations. In most Canadian Provinces Hypnotherapy isn’t regulated which means, anyone can take a weekend workshop or read a book and call themselves a Hypnotherapist. Countless are the times I have heard “I tried Hypnosis and it didn’t work”. Hypnotherapy, when administered by an experienced, well trained Hypnotherapist, works! A Clinical Hypnotherapist is someone with some formal training in Psychotherapy and Neuro Therapy. It is therefore not recommended to look for a Clinical Hypnotherapist. The following are some things you should research and consider before investing your time and money into this choice of therapist:
HOW DO I FIND A CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPIST APPROPRIATE FOR ME?
When being treated by a Clinical Hypnotherapist, it is important to appreciate that the hypnotherapist’s experience is just as important as his/her qualifications. Take the time to speak with any potential therapist, prior to treatment, about your expectations and the results you’d like to achieve. In today’s busy society, an in person consultation isn’t always practical so it is important to at least speak over the phone to establish that the investment you are going to make is with someone you feel comfortable with.
Your hypnotherapist will initially endeavor to establish rapport with you and you must feel comfortable talking to him/her for the treatment to succeed. If you don’t feel comfortable with a potential therapist, consider finding another whom you do feel comfortable with.
DOES THE CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPIST HAVE A FULL TIME PRACTICE?
A well trained, experienced Clinical Hypnotherapist will have a full time practice. The amount of time and financial investment involved in becoming a fully accredited Clinical Hypnotherapist isn’t a part time kind of thing. As with any profession, gaining the experience one needs to be really effective at their craft requires a full time commitment.
DOES THE CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPIST SPECIALIZE IN WHAT I AM SEEKING TREATMENT FOR?
While a well trained, fully experienced Clinical Hypnotherapist can effectively help with any issue, one that specializes in a particular area has focused on and had additional, specific training. You don’t want to be part of someone’s learning curve do you?
IS THE HYPNOTHERAPIST FULLY ACCREDITED?
All Clinical Hypnotherapists can and should be registered with a reputable professional hypnotherapy association. Does the Clinical Hypnotherapist use the title “registered”? Reputable associations have varying entry criteria and different qualification requirements for their registered practitioners, some are pretty easy to join with little to no actual training requirements so it’s important to check the association’s criteria when choosing a Clinical Hypnotherapist. The Clinical Hypnotherapist you are considering should be registered and their website should provide a link to the Association they are registered with that you can check.
WHAT OTHER QUESTIONS SHOULD I ASK MY CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPIST PRIOR TO TREATMENT?
When speaking to a potential therapist, you should ask:
- What type and how many hours of training have you had?
- Have you dealt with this type of issue before?
- What level of success have you had in dealing with this type of issue?
- How many years have you been in full time practice?
- How many sessions will I need and what can I expect to experience from each one?
Finally, you should approach your treatment with both an open mind and an active intention to change whatever issue it is that is negatively impacting on your life.
